Italian Hospital Kills EightRome, May 5 (Prensa Latina) Italian Attorney´s Office investigated on Saturday eight patients´ death in Apulia region (south) who by error, were provided with nitrogen instead of Oxygen. In the Intensive Care Unit (UCI) of the locality heart medicine institution the patients should have to receive oxygen through masks but the investigation released that instead they inhaled protoxide of nitrogen, an anaesthetic. The investigators found the breathing equipment defective provoking to close UCI that was inaugurates last April 20. A hospital top official agreed with the police report. The medical staff should have mistaken oxygen outlet with nitrogen at the beds´ head. The situation is rather confused since the oxygen connexion is white and the one of nitrogen is blue, explained a hospital spokesman. That could be the cause of seven previous deaths at the same aid center, said the judges. The case is one of the most recent in a series of the Italian health system that has been call into question for many years ago. |
